Did you wear your Pudsey ears for BBC Children in Need 2024?

Every year in November, the BBC runs one of Britain's biggest charity events called BBC Children in Need, who raise money for disadvantaged children and young adults.

In 1980, Dame Esther Rantzen, Sue Lawly and Sir Terry Wogan hosted the first broadcast show raising £1,000,000 for charities across the U.K. In fact, raising money for chilren in poverty originally started on Christmas day in 1927 when BBC radio collected more than £1,300 (around £70,000 in today's money) for four children's charities.

At Effective Consumable Solutions, we believe that no child or young adult should go without food, clothes and vital support/guidance. As a nation, we can collectively help to change their future. Children and young adults across the UK should have the necessary essentials to help support them throughout their life.

When we talk about the importance of providing children with essentials, it can also affect their education if they don't have appropriate food or clothing. In June 2022, 1.9 million children received free school meals and the 26.6% who were eligible received five good GSCEs in Mathematics and English, however, compared with the other 54.2% of non-free school meal pupils, this does not provide them with a high chance of a good quality life with greater opportunities heading into adulthood.

This year, during the run up to BBC Children in Need's show that aired on Friday 15th November, millions of people across the UK did their bit to help support both children and young adults by raising funds. For example, Paddy McGuiness cycled 300 miles around England, Wales and Scotland on a Raleigh Chopper! Must be comfortable... but for a worthy cause.

While BBC's Children in Need event is over for another year, you can get an early start for the next event. Raising funds for children and young adults in need is an ongoing need after all! Here are four ways in which you can help to raise money and increase awareness, starting today:

1. Host a bingo night

Host a zoom bingo night, invite your friends and ask for a £1 donation! The winner receives a baked treat

2. Raffle

Ask friends and local businesses to donate brilliant prizes online and then host a virtual raffle

3. X-factor karaoke

You don't need Simon Cowell to host an X-factor night! Get participants to belt out their favourite X-factor tunes on zoom (for a fee, of course) and award the winner

4. Nature walk

This is a great option for those who know a bit about their local area - charge £1 per person to take a small group of friends for a fascinating walk-about where you can point our interesting sights or unusual flora and fauna.
